ERIE, Pa. --
Jonathan Charbonneau's third-period goal stood as the game-winner as the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team defeated Niagara, 3-2, in Atlantic Hockey action in front of 1,386 fans on Friday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Charbonneau,
Derek Barach and
Kyle Dutra had two-point nights -- one goal and one assist each -- while winning goaltender
Adam Carlson made 33 saves for a Laker team that killed off seven Niagara power plays.
Charbonneau knocked home his winner off a feed from Dutra. Barach also assisted the play, which occurred with 9:04 remaining in the third period.
Barach gave Mercyhurst (9-10, 7-6) the game's first lead just 54 seconds into the contest. He was assisted by Charbonneau.
The visiting Purple Eagles (3-14-2, 3-9-1) answered late in the first -- with 25 seconds left -- on a goal by Keegan Harper. Then, in the second, NU took its only lead on a goal by Stephen Pietrobon.
Dutra evened the game at 2-2 late in the second, blasting a slap shot in from behind the Niagara blue line. He received assists from
Jack Riley and
Josh Lammon on the play.
Jackson Teichroeb made 15 saves in net for Niagara. The Purple Eagles held a 35-18 shot advantage over Mercyhurst while the teams combined to go 0-for-11 on the power play (Mercyhurst, 0-4).
The same two teams will meet again on Saturday -- this time at Niagara. Faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
