ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Syracuse in College Hockey America play at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Saturday.
Jillian Skinner scored the lone Laker goal while goaltender
Sarah McDonnell finished with 32 saves.
Syracuse's Jessica Sibley connected on the game-winner with 1:30 remaining in the extra period. MU was shorthanded the entirety of extra time -- with the exception of the opening four seconds -- due to a major penalty.
Lucky bounces contributed to each of the teams' goals in regulation. With 1:53 left in the first period, a slapshot from Skinner was deflected high into the air, slowly fluttering over the head of Syracuse goalie Jenn Gilligan to give the host Lakers a 1-0 advantage.
The Orange answered just 30 seconds into the second on a goal by Stephanie Grossi. While breaking out of its defensive zone, Mercyhurst had trouble navigating the puck past a linesman and SU capitalized on the turnover to ie the contest at 1-all.
Syracuse (12-13-3, 8-4-2) controlled much of the action throughout the game, finishing with a 34-11 shot advantage. It went 1-for-6 on the power play while Mercyhurst was 0-for-4. Gilligan ended the game with 10 stops.
The Lakers (12-10-4, 9-3-2)Â will return to action on Feb. 5-6 with a pair of CHA contest at Robert Morris.
