Men's Ice Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep of AIC with 5-3 Win

ERIE, Pa. -- Derek Barach scored two goals while Jonathan Charbonneau and Anthony Mastrodicasa made two assists each as the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team claimed a 5-3 win over American International in Atlantic Hockey action in front of 1,263 fans at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Saturday.

Chris Makowski, Michael Verboom and Josh Lammon also had goals for the Lakers (13-12-1, 11-8-1).

After Johnny Mueller gave visiting AIC a 1-0 lead in the first period, Barach and Makowski answered with even-strength tallies. Barach was assisted by Charbonneau and Kyle Cook. Kane Elliot and Wes Baker assisted the Makowski goal as host MU took a 2-1 lead. However, the Yellow Jackets (5-20-2, 5-14-2) came back with a goal by Mitch Mueller to the the contest at 2-all.

The Lakers won the second period and used that advantage to win the game. Barach scored on a slapshot which hit the glass behind AIC goaltender Alex Murray -- and then bounced off Murray's back and into the Yellow Jacket net. Charbonneau and Mastrodicasa had assists.

Later in the second, Austin Orszulak answered for American International, tying the contest at 3-all, before Verboom gave the Lakers the lead for good with assists from Matthew Whittaker and Thomas Bucci.

A power-play goal by Josh Lammon gave Mercyhurst a two-goal cushion shortly into the third. Mastrodicasa and Jack Riley provided assists.

Goaltender Brandon Wildung made the MU lead stand from there, finishing with 22 saves. Murray totaled 19 stops for AIC.

Mercyhurst went 1-for-2 on the power play while AIC was 0-for-2.

The Lakers will return to action on Feb. 5-6 with home AHA against Bentley.
