Women's Ice Hockey Pushes Past Syracuse, 4-1

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team rattled off four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Syracuse in College Hockey America action at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Friday.

J'nai Mahadeo scored a power-play goal, Emily Janiga had a shorthanded goal and Jenna Dingeldein knocked in two empty-netters in a game in which all five tallies were registered with uneven skaters on the opposing sides. Dingeldein and Mahadeo also tacked on assists.

Emily Costales put the visiting Orange ahead with a power-play goal just 3:38 into the contest.

That 1-0 SU lead held until the 8:35 mark of the second period when Mahadeo raced down the right side and put in her PP goal through the five-hole of Syracuse goaltender Jenn Gilligan. Dingeldein assisted the goal.

Later in the second, host Lakers benefitted from an Orange turnover in the neutral zone on Janiga's breakaway goal. The MU captain was assisted by Lauren Kilroy.

Both of Dingeldein's goals occurred in the final minute of the contest. Sarah Robello and Sarah Hine assisted the first one, with 55 seconds left, before Mahadeo and Jaclyn Arbour assisted the final score with 15 ticks remaining.

Mercyhurst goalie Sarah McDonnell totaled 21 saves in the win while Gilligan made 22 stops for SU (11-13-3, 7-4-2).

The Lakers went 1-for-7 on the power play while Syracuse was 1-for-5. The Lakers held a 26-22 shot advantage.

The same two teams will meet again on Saturday in Erie. Faceoff is slated for 2 p.m.
