Field Hockey’s Comeback Falls Short; Loses to Bellarmine, 3-2, in Overtime

ERIE, Pa. The Mercyhurst University Field Hockey team came back from a two goal deficit to force overtime, but it wasn't enough, as Bellarmine came away with a 3-2 victory at Tullio Field in the 2015 season opener.

It was a rough start out of the gate for the Lakers as the Knights scored two minutes into the first half. Kathryn Shneidtmiller scored the opening goal, beating the keeper left side. Bellarmine would it make it a two goal lead in the 22nd minute, when Lillie Nitzken dished a pass to Alex Ginter for the score.

With Mercyhurst trailing by two 14 minutes into the second half, Alexandra Albright scored to cut the Knight lead in half. Cayla Slade was able to assist Albright who was able to beat the goalie left side.

The Lakers would tie the game in the 62nd minute, when Andrea Goldbach tipped in an Emily Burns shot taking from outside the circle. Goldbach redirected the shot as she tipped it off her stick and into the back of the net to force overtime.

However, the second half comeback fell short early in overtime as a Hannah Doll pass through the defense found Alexis Van Wallaghen for the game winning goal.

Both teams ended the game with 13 recorded shots, while the Knights were able to put four more shots on net than the Lakers, 10-6. Mercyhurst did hold the corner advantage with nine opportunities to Bellarmines seven.

The Lakers will be back in action tomorrow with another match at home against American International at 2:00 p.m.
