McAlpin, Karoliussen Lead Women’s Soccer to a, 2-0, Shutout Victory over Daemen Tuesday Night

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst University women's soccer team defeated Daemen College, 2-0, in non-conference action Tuesday night at Dimp Wagner Stadium. Both Nicole McAlpin (Fairport, N.Y.) and Ingrid Karoliussen (Narvik, Norway) scored goals for the Lakers to help propel their team to their second consecutive win.

Mercyhurst's win moves their record to 4-3-2 overall (3-3-2 PSAC) while they have gone 4-1-1 over their last six contests. After winning three of its last four matches, Daemen falls to 3-6-1 overall, (1-1-0 ECC),

With heavy downpours falling for the majority of the match, it slowed the pace of the game as the first shot wasn't recorded until the 14:54 mark of the first half. Fawn Mulholland headed a ball off a corner kick opportunity that looked to be heading into the back of the net but was saved by a Wildcat defenseman.

With 27:24 showing on the clock, the Lakers would score the game's first goal off a free kick taken from Rebekah Reynolds (Ballymena, Northern Ireland) from 40 yards out. Reynolds kick was sent into the box where it found the foot of McAlpin who then deflected the ball past Daemen net minder Meaghan O'Leary for 1-0 Lakers' lead. It was McAlpin's second goal of the season and Reynolds second assist.

The Lakers were able to add an insurance goal at the 75:01 mark, scoring on a corner kick opportunity.  O'Leary deflected an initial header attempt by Kristina Roberti, but the ball hit off the crossbar, came back down in front of the goal and was touched home by Ingrid Karoliussen to put the guests ahead by two. It was Karoliussen's first goal of the season.

The two goal lead was plenty for senior goalkeeper Ellie McDougall, who recorded her second shutout of the season. McDougall made five saves for the Lakers while O'Leary made three saves for the Wildcats.

Mercyhurst finished the contest outshooting the Daemen, 14-9, and also held the corner advantage. 4-1.

The Lakers will travel to Pitt-Johnstown Saturday, October 3, to resume Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Game time is set for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
