Men’s Soccer Loses Close Battle at #24 Cedarville, 2-1, Wednesday Night

CEDARVILLE, OH – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team lost another close non-conference battle Wednesday night at #24 Cedarville, 2-1. Freshman Hunter Burri scored the Lakers lone goal, his first of the season. The loss brings Mercyhurst's record to 3-7 overall while Cedarville improves to 8-1-1.

Three minutes before the end of the first half, the Yellow Jackets struck first. Cedarville's Joel Twinem was able to one time a cross pass past Laker net minder Daniel Lowton for a 1-0 halftime advantage.

The Lakers were able to even the score in the middle of second when freshman Hunter Burri recorded his first goal of the season. The goal came off of a free kick taken by redshirt senior Mark Roche from 30 yards out. Roche placed the ball off the crossbar where it found Burri for a rebound shot. The Honeoye Falls, N.Y. native was able to bury the rebound past Yellow Jackets goalkeeper Paulo Pinto to tie the game at one.

Cedarville would later break the tie in the 82nd minute when the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) leading goal scorer Conner Gilmour scored his 12th of the season. Teammate Jon Brown placed a header into the air that Gilmour scissor kicked into the back of the net for the go ahead goal.

The Yellow Jackets edged the Lakers in shots, 14-9, and also held the corner kick advantage, 9-4.

Despite a tough non-conference schedule that featured three nationally ranked opponents, Mercyhurst fell to 0-6 in non-conference action this season. It is the first time in at least ten seasons the men's soccer program has failed to win a non-conference game.

Mercyhurst will look to resume PSAC play Saturday, October 3, when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
