ERIE, Pa. - Mercyhurst senior defenseman Sten Marcson's early second half penalty-kick goal proved to be decisive as the men's soccer team defeated Slippery Rick 1-0 Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers, winners of two straight, improved to 3-5 overall and to 3-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Rock, losers of two straight, dropped to 4-3 and 2-2 respectively.
Marcson's penalty kick came at 50:24 and eluded Slippery Rock netminder Kyle Hoffer (3-2). Marcson has two goals this season, both on penalty kicks.
Mercyhurst outshot Slippery Rock 17-9 but SRU had a slight 5-4 margin in corners.
Daniel Lowton, a graduate student from the United Kingdom, made his first start of the season in goal for the Lakers and was credited with three saves. Hoffer stopped six Lakers' shots.
The Lakers will try for three in-a-row Sunday when they host Urbana at 1pm. The contest will be part of Mercyhurst's 2015 Homecoming celebration.
