Field Hockey Wins Third Straight; Downs Seton Hill, 3-1

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University field hockey team won its third straight game Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over visiting Seton Hill in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match. The Lakers improved to 3-4, 1-0 PSAC while the Griffins dropped to 0-6, 0-1 PSAC.

The Lakers opened the scoring 16 minutes into the game when senior forward Cayla Slade found the back of the Giffins' net. Sophomore defender Taylor Balser tallied about nine minutes later, converting just under the crossbar off a corner, and the Lakers went to intermission with a 2-0 advantage. It was Slade's first goal of the season and Balser's second.

Mercyhurst enjoyed an 8-1 advantage in first-half shots and a 5-3 margin in corners.

Seton Hill halved the lead at 49:58 when junior forward Alisha Bell scored on a rebound. But, less than two minutes later, freshman forward Katelyn Smith banged home her own rebound following a corner. It was Smith's team-leading fourth goal of the year. Neither team scored in the final 18 plus minutes of action.

Mercyhurst had a sizeable advantage in shots (25-4), shots on goal (16-2), and corners (20-5).

Seton Hill sophomore goaltender, Jane Eberhardt, was valiant in defeat, stopping a dozen Mercyhurst shots. Mercyhurst senior Sam Takac (3-4) had one save in the 70 minutes.

The Lakers will return to action Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. when they host #5 Kutztown during Homecoming Weekend.
