ERIE, Pa. - After starting the season with eight straight contests on the road, the Mercyhurst University volleyball team returned to the friendly confines of the Mercyhurst Athletic Center and took care of visiting Concord University on day one of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference / Mountain East Crossover on Friday night. The Lakers swept the Mountain Lions - 25-20, 25-12, 25-22 - to improve to 3-6 on the young season. Concord dropped to 1-11 overall.
Junior
Lauren Kenny led the way for the Lakers with 13 points, posting a team-high 11 kills, while also adding three digs and four block assists. Junior
Sarah Wegrzyn played the first two games of the match and recorded nine kills and just one error in 18 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage. She also added two digs in the victory.
Junior
Sarah Puckett also had an impressive match, chipping in with five kills and a team-high six digs. Puckett was also an integral part in serving, leading the team to a couple of key runs during the match. She finished with a team-high four service aces in the win.
Mercyhurst also got several key contributions from future starters in game two and three. Freshman
Shelby Chesko had four kills and four digs and sophomore
Freda Ireigbe had a kill and four total blocks. Sophomore Makayla Mollé and junior
Hannah Tombaugh combined for ten assists over the final two games.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. when they host West Virginia State at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Mercyhurst will follow up that contest with another match at 4:00 p.m. against Notre Dame College - also at the MAC.
