Volleyball Blanks West Virginia State And Notre Dame College On Saturday

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's volleyball team took care of business on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, defeating West Virginia State, 3-0, and Notre Dame College, 3-0, on the final day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) - Mountain East Conference (MEC) Crossover. With the victories, the Lakers have now won three straight matches, and five of their last six, to improve to 5-6 overall on the season.

In the opening match of the day, Mercyhurst handled the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State by the scores of 25-17, 25-18, and 25-18.

Junior Haley Adams led the way for the Lakers, posting 14 points in the match. She hit .600 by collecting seven kills and just one error in ten attempts. Adams also added three service aces, three solo blocks, and two assisted blocks in the victory. Junior Sarah Puckett continued her strong weekend with seven kills, four service aces, and five digs for a total of 11 points.

Junior Sarah Wegrzyn led the Lakers with nine kills while junior libero Samantha Giardina posted eight digs in the victory.

After Indiana (Pa.) won a pair of matches against West Virginia State and Notre Dame College, the Lakers finished off the crossover with a match against the Falcons. Mercyhurst had little trouble is defeating Notre Dame, 25-19, 25-10, and 25-12, for its third straight victory.

Wegrzyn led the way with 14 kills and five digs while Adams finished off her fine Saturday by posting seven kills and no errors in ten attempts for a .700 hitting percentage. Puckett and junior Lauren Kenny chipped in with seven points apiece. Puckett had four kills, three aces, and five digs, while Kenny added six kills, five digs, and two block assists.

Mercyhurst will host another crossover tournament next weekend at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. On Friday, September 25, Mercyhurst will play against Shippensburg at 11:35 a.m. and then will square off against Millersville at 7:35 p.m. Saturday, September 26 will feature the Lakers against Pitt-Johnstown at 10:05 a.m. and will conclude with a match against the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven at 6:05 p.m.
