Marcson’s Late Penalty Shot Leads Men’s Soccer to, 2-1, Victory Over #17 East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Senior Sten Marcson  converted on a penalty shot in the 87th minute to defeat #17 East Stroudsburg, 2-1, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. The win improves the Lakers record to 2-5, 2-1 PSAC, while the Warriors fall to 4-2, 2-2 PSAC.

Redshirt senior Thomas Davis got Mercyhurst on the board first, scoring off a rebound to give the Lakers an early 1-0 advantage. The rebound shot came off a corner opportunity in the 30th minute. The goal was Davis' second of the season.

With just over 15 minutes left to play, East Stroudsburg would tie the score at one after Casey Choffy headed in a shot off a free kick from midfield.

As time was winding down, Marcson took a foul in the box and was rewarded a penalty shot. The defenseman from Onsala, Sweden drilled the shot into the back of the net to put Mercyhurst ahead, 2-1. It was Marson's first goal of the season.

The Warriors were unable to attempt a shot in the remaining minutes as the Lakers held on for their second win of the year.

Mercyhurst outshot East Stroudsburg, 13-11, while each team had four corner opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Nicholas Smith recorded four saves.

The Lakers will host Slippery Rock Wednesday, September 23, at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. The PSAC matchup is set for 3:30 p.m.
