Men’s Soccer Falls at Alderson Broaddus Thursday Night, 2-1

PHILIPPI, WV – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision Thursday night at Alderson Broaddus in non-conference play. Thom Derks scored the Lakers lone goal.

Mercyhurst was able to score first in the 21st minute after Derks redirected a shot from the left side that found the back of the net for the early 1-0 advantage. For Derks, it was his first goal of the season.

Junior Nicholas Smith played well in the first half for the Lakers in net, as he was able to stop all five Battler shots.

Alderson Broaddus would tie the game at one just four minutes into the second half, and would eventually take the lead in the 57th minute.

The strong Battlers defense, who has only allowed four goals coming into today's contest, gave Mercyhurst no opportunities to try and force overtime. The Lakers were only able to generate four shots, three on net, the entire game.

The Battlers held the shot advantage, 9-4, while they also were rewarded with six more corner opportunities, 7-1. Smith ended the day recording four saves.

The loss brings Mercyhurst's record to 1-5 overall, and the Battlers improve to 4-0-1.

The Lakers will be on the road again this Saturday, Semptember 19, at 6:00 p.m., when they take on the Warriors of East Stroudsburg.
