ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team was shutout by the University of District of Columbia, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Mercyhurst soccer field.
The Lakers had a great opportunity to score 55 seconds into the game, when
Richard Vanhorne chased down a ball and almost beat the keeper left. However, District of Columbia goalkeeper Louis Conner made the save, just getting a toe on the ball to deflect it wide of the goal.
As both teams came out of the locker room tied with no score, it was the firebirds who struck early in the second half. After a
Nicholas Smith diving save pushed the ball out of play, District of Columbia was rewarded a corner that led to the 1-0 lead. Elio Hernandez put a solid ball into the middle of the box where Victor Furio was able to head the ball into the back of the net.
Mercyhurst couldn't seem to find their rhythm after that, as they were outshot 10-8 (4-4 on net) and were not rewarded any corner kicks (6-0, UDC).
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 1-4 overall, while District of Columbia picks up their first win of the season, improving to 1-3-1.
Mercyhurst travel to Alderson Broaddus for their first road game this season Thursday, September 17. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
