Field Hockey Falls at #9 Bloomsburg Saturday Afternoon

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's field hockey team scored twice in each half Saturday in dealing Mercyhurst a 4-1 setback on a rainy, windy day at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies improved to 3-1 while the Lakers dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Bloomsburg opened a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Abby Sauder (15:35) and Sam Peters (16:52). The Lakers got back into the contest when sophomore Nicolette Tomani scored with help from freshman Jessica Brandon, at 34:33. Brandon's crossing pass was knocked in the left side of the goal by Tomani.

Bloomsburg outshot Mercyhurst 12-3 in the first half.

Although the Lakers had the territorial advantage in the second half, they couldn't solve Huskies' netminder Lindsay Cassel. Despite being outshot 12-5 in the half, Bloomsburg got goals from Nikki Gattone (44:20) and Whitney Kowski (52:48) to put the game away.

Bloomsburg outshot Mercyhurst 17-15 in the game, but the Lakers had more penalty corners, 17-6. Mercyhurst goaltender Sam Takac was credited with four saves.

The Lakers will seek their first win of the season Tuesday, September 15, when they travel to Mansfield for a 4:00 p.m. game.
