MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mercyhurst field hockey team won, 6-1 at Mansfield Tuesday afternoon.
Jessica Brandon recorded a hat trick for the Lakers in the non-conference matchup.
It was Brandon who put Mercyhurst ahead, 1-0 at the 10:09 mark as she dribbled in past the defense and blasted home a goal from 10 yards out.
The Mountaineers would tie the game at one 50 seconds later off a deflected pass that wound up in the back of the net.
Brandon would break the tie at the 21:25 mark, when she received a rebound off the keeper and put a shot on goal from five yards out, to give Mercyhurst a 2-1 advantage.
Minutes later, Brandon gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead off a tipped shot from
Katelyn Smith that went over the goalies head. The hat trick was the first since
Blair Pembleton against Mansfield on October 23, 2013.
The Lakers would add another goal before the end of the half as Smith dribbled around the goalie and beat the keeper for a 4-1 halftime lead. It was Smith's second goal of the season.
Mercyhurst would tack on two more goals in the second half.
Amanda Schanz recorded her first of the season three minutes into the period, as
Cayla Slade dished a pass from the far post for Schanz to finish off.
Katrina Bruzda would finish off the Mountaineers with five minutes to play as she took a shot from just inside the circle that found the back of the net. It was Bruzda's first goal of the season.
The Lakers attempted 18 shots on goal, as Mansfield tried 6.
Sam Takac recorded five saves in net.
Mercyhurst improved to 1-4 overall, while Mansfield fell to 0-5. The Lakers play Lindenwood Saturday, September 19, at Tullio Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
