FINDLAY, Ohio - The Mercyhurst University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday during day one at the University of Findlay Invitational. The Lakers lost their first match of the day, 3-1, against former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Hillsdale College - 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 17-25. Mercyhurst then rebounded in the nightcap for its first victory of the 2015 season with a 3-0 win over Cedarville - 25-23, 25-16, 25-22. The Lakers are now 1-5 on the young campaign.
Mercyhurst won the first game against Hillsdale before the Chargers won three straight to earn the victory. Junior
Lauren Kenny led the way by posting 16 points. She had 15 kills, three digs, and two block assists during the match. Senior
Erin Byrnes chipped in with 13 kills and seven digs and senior setter
Kelly Vitt provided 38 assists, five service aces, and nine digs.
The Lakers picked up their first victory of the season with a three-game sweep over Cedarville. Mercyhurst hit .341 for the match, posting 40 kills while committing only nine hitting errors in 91 chances.
Junior
Sarah Wegrzyn had a huge effort in the victory, posting 14 kills and no errors in 26 attempts for a .538 hitting percentage. She added three digs and two block assists for a total of 15 points. Byrnes added a dozen kills and six digs while Kenny posted five kills, seven digs, and three service aces. Junior
Haley Adams was a force at the net against the Yellow Jackets, providing the Lakers with a solo block and six block assists. She also chipped in with four kills.
Mercyhurst will be back in action on Saturday, September 12, with a pair of matches at Findlay's Croy Gymnasium. The Lakers will take on Ursuline at 9:00 a.m. followed by a match against the host Oilers at 1:00 p.m.
