ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University baseball team continued its phenomenal start to the 2015 season with 9-3 and 9-0 victories over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe Clarion University Saturday afternoon. The sweep improved the Lakers' overall record to 14-0 and its conference mark to 6-0. Clarion fell to 1-10 and 0-6 respectively. Mercyhurst took all four games from the Golden Eagles over the last two days by a combined score of 36-9.
The red-hot Lakers scored in every inning but the sixth in the opener as redshirt sophomore
Colin McKee picked up his third win. McKee went five, allowed four hits and two earned runs, and struck out nine. Freshman
Matthew Minnick pitched the sixth inning and totaled a pair of strikeouts. Freshman
Connor Ryan worked the seventh and allowed an unearned run.
Senior leadoff hitter
Angel Martinez, led the offense with three hits, including a double and two runs-batted-in. Junior cleanup man,
Dan Popio, singled and doubled in three trips and drove in a pair. Other RBIs went to junior
Hank Morrison, senior
Jake Marinelli, and sophomore
Cameron Balego.
Clarion scored single runs in the second, fifth, and seventh. Junior Tyler Delval (0-3) took the loss. He was chased after allowing four runs, all earned, in 2.1 innings. Two relievers finished the game.
Mercyhurst did itself one better in the second contest by scoring in every inning. Martinez, Morrison, and Balego combined for seven of the Lakers' 12 hits, scored three times and drove in seven. In addition to two singles, Morrison had the doubleheader's only round-tripper, a two-run shot in the third. It was his team-leading third homerun of the season. Martinez had a pair of run-producing doubles and is now tied for the team lead with four. Balego batted in two runs with a pair of singles.
Redshirt senior
Jon Klein (3-0) went six innings, allowed only three hits, and struck out ten. Klein has yet to allow a run in 18 innings of work this season. Redshirt senior
Jordan Bray pitched a 1-2-3 seventh with one strikeout. Clarion sophomore Kane McCall (0-3) went the first five and gave up five runs and six hits.
Mercyhurst will be back in action this Tuesday when it entertains Malone University for a pair of games. The Lakers swept the Pioneers by scores of 7-6 and 6-1 in Canton, Ohio, last Tuesday.
