Box Score ERIE, PA – The #9 ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team beat St. Thomas Aquinas College 15-9 on a brisk Sunday morning at Tullio Field.
Rebecca Himes led the Lakers with 5 goals and 3 assists as the Lakers advanced to a 3-1 record for the season.
Mercyhurst took an early lead as
Taylor Ventre found the back of the net with an unassisted goal to start the first half. Ventre then assisted two goals, finding teammates Himes and
Hannah Corton in scoring position.
Emily Gebhardt found another goal for the Lakers attack, as St. Thomas Aquinas added a few of their own to tie the game 4-4. Gebhardt and midfielder
Janelle Williams were able to capitalize on two more goals sending the squad into halftime leading 6-4.
Scoring momentum was kick started in the second half as Himes, Ventre, and Williams once again picked up goals for the Lakers. After a 6 goal streak, Mercyhurst was leading Aquinas 10-4 with 19:02 remaining in the second half. At this time, Spartan Genevieve Stickney posted her final of three goals to keep St. Thomas Aquinas in the game. The two teams battled from that point on, with Himes,
Jenna Schlagenhauf, and Corton finishing out the scoring for the half. Goalie,
Rebecca Muscella, had 8 saves during the contest and is credited with the win.
The Lakers outshot the Spartans 26-23 and held the advantage in draw controls 16-10.
Mercyhurst returns to Tullio Field this Thursday for a rescheduled game versus Tiffin University. The Lakers will be hosting the non-conference contest at 4:00p.m.
