Bloomsburg, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team suffered a tough loss at Bloomsburg Friday night, 66-61, in double overtime.
Angela Heintz recorded a double-double, scoring 16 and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Adrienne Kloecker scored 11 points, making her two shy of 1,000 career points heading into tomorrow's game at East Stroudsburg.
The Huskies got off to a hot start as they opened the game with a 13-2 lead. The Lakers would score the last five points of the first period to cut the deficit to six, 13-7.
Mercyhurst would carry over their 5-0 spurt from the first period into the second as Heintz would score the next eight points all on her own. The transfer junior from Bethal Park, Pa. drained two threes and converted a layup, to give the Lakers their first lead of the game, 15-13. The 16-0 run would conclude with a Kloecker three ball, opening up a five point advantage, 18-13, with 6:41 remaining in the first half. Bloomsburg would tie the game at 23 all heading into the break.
The Lakers would lead by as many as six in the third period, and would take a five point advantage heading into the fourth quarter, 40-35.
Bloomsburg would regain the lead with 2:03 to play, 47-45, and would eventually took a three point advantage, 51-48, with 15 seconds remaining. Haley Andres would tie the game at 51 when she drained a three with nine seconds to play to force overtime.
Heintz would provide the heroics in the first overtime as she drained her fourth three pointer of the night to force a second overtime period. Heintz's three came with 28 seconds remaining, tying the game at 56. Mercyhurst would never hold a lead in the period.
In the second overtime period, the Huskies would finally pull away, holding the Lakers to only five points in the frame. Mercyhurst would, again, never hold a lead in the second overtime period.
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play, while the Huskies improve to 6-1, 3-1 PSAC.
Mercyhurst will continue crossover action tomorrow at East Stroudsburg. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
