ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's basketball team was plagued by cold shooting Tuesday night and ultimately suffered a 64-42 setback to visiting Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division game played at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC). The Lakers' record fell to 3-5 overall and to 2-2 in the conference. The Fighting Scots improved to 7-2 and 3-1, respectively.
Mercyhurst got out of the gate quickly, bolting to an 8-2 lead two-and-a-half minutes into the first quarter. But it was all Edinboro after that. The Lakers were held to just two points the remainder of the quarter, a jumper by senior
Adrienne Kloecker, as the Scots rallied for a 13-10 lead after one. The lead swelled to 32-18 by halftime and to 47-30 after three.
Mercyhurst had only one player in double figures: junior
Angela Heintz finished with 15, two more than her season average. Mercyhurst juniors
Natalie Piaggesi and
Jessica Bell, who entered the contest averaging 13.4 and 12.9 points-per-game, respectively, were held to six points apiece. Piaggesi did pull down a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, the Lakers shot 28.6% from the floor (16-of-56), including 7-of-23 beyond the arc. Heintz was the only Laker to attempt a free throw in the game, finishing 3-of-4.
Merchurst had no answer for Edinboro freshman Michelle Jahn and senior Aignee Freeland. The outside/inside duo combined for 42 points, including a career best 22 from Jahn. Freeland also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds as Edinboro outdistanced Mercyhurst 39-31 on the glass. Jahn and Freeland made a combined 18-of-26 shots while the rest of the Scots were limited to 7 for 26 shooting.
The 42 points for the Lakers were their fewest since a 65-39 loss at Seton Hill January 29, 2014.
Mercyhurst will take to the road this weekend for PSAC crossover action at Bloomsburg Friday at 5:30 p.m. and at East Stroudsburg Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
