ERIE, Pa. - Basketball teams that shoot 57% from the floor - all things being equal - usually win. The visiting Edinboro men's basketball team did just that Tuesday night and came away with a 77-67 win over host Mercyhurst in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division game played at the Athletic Center. Mercyhurst dropped to 4-2 overall and to 2-2 in the conference. The Fighting Scots, who snapped a four-game losing streak to the Lakers, improved to 3-2 and 3-1 respectively.
Edinboro shot 52.4% in the first half, which ended with the Scots in front 30-24. The Lakers were held to 36% efficiency, including 1-of-11 beyond the arc.
Things didn't get any better in the second half as the Fighting Scots cashed 60% of their shots (18 of 30).
Mercyhurst finished 24 of 56 from the floor (42.9) but made just 1 of 18 triples, 5.6%. The Lakers converted 18 of 26 free throws. Edinboro shot 29 of 51 including 6 of 14 beyond the arc. The Scots also shot well from the line, making 13 of 15. Mercyhurst had one fewer rebound (29-30) and two fewer turnovers (11-13).
Three Lakers finished in double figures: senior
Damon Jones led with 20 followed by both senior
Sean Beins and junior
H'ian Hale with 10 apiece. The trio shot a combined 16 of 27 from the field; the rest shot only 8 of 29. Hale had the Lakers' only triple.
Edinboro finished with four players in double digits: sophomore Jaymon Mason and junior Sheldon Brogdon tallied 19 each. Brogdon's points, which included 5 of 7 triples, came in a reserve role. Senior Tommy Scales chipped in with 15 while senior Henri Wade-Chatman contributed 14.
Mercyhurst will travel to both Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg this weekend for PSAC crossover games. The Lakers will be in Bloomsburg Friday for a 7:30 game and visit East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
