UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –
Brooke Hartwick scored the equalizer midway through the third period on a power play and
Sarah McDonnell stayed strong in goal through the extra session to help Mercyhurst skate to a 1-1 tie at Penn State.
Penn State's lone goal came early in the third when Shannon Yoxheimer found the back of the net at 4:51. For the Lakers, it was Hartwick's first goal of the sason, and
Megan Whiddon and
Paige Horton combined for assists on the goal.
Mercyhurst (3-5-2, 3-0-1) avenged a tough two-game setback to the Lady Lions (3-7-2, 0-2-2) from a year ago, coming away from this weekend's series with three points following Friday night's 1-0 victory at Penn State.
Both teams went scoreless in the opening two stanzas and played relatively clean, with just five combined penalties. Mercyhurst was able to take advantage of Penn State's mistake in the third but was not able to capitalize on the only power play in the overtime session.
McDonnell went the distance between the pipes for Mercyhurst, turning away 25 shots on goal, including 14 in the second period.
The Lakers return home for a College Hockey America series on Nov. 13-14 when they host Lindenwood at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Face-off is set for 6 pm and 1 pm, respectively.
