ERIE, Pa. -- Mercyhurst women's volleyball held on in a five-set thriller to upset rival Edinboro, 3-2, and in the process, snapped the Fighting Scots 15-match win streak. The Lakers (15-15, 10-9 PSAC) opened with a first-set win 27-25 before falling in the next two sets 25-255 and 25-20. With their backs against the wall, the Lakers rallied to take the fourth set 25-22 and the fifth set 15-12.
Edinboro (28-3, 17-2) could have tied a school record with 16 consecutive victories but Mercyhurst used a balanced offense and stingy defense en route to the victory.
Erin Byrnes led the Laker offense with 19 kills while
Sarah Wegrzyn talled 16 and
Lauren Kenny contributed 12 kills. Byrnes also helped the defense, finished third on the team in digs with 15 while adding a block assist.
Samantha Giardina led the Lakers in digs with 20 while
Kelly Vitt added 16 to go along with her 45 assists.
Sarah Puckett also finished in double-digits for Mercyhurst with 13 digs. Freida Ireigbe came up big for the Lakers, notching seven kills to go along with two block assists.
Next up the Lakers is the regular-season home-finale against Slippery Rock on Saturday, November 7 at 2 pm. Mercyhurst will honor seniors Byrnes, Vitt and
Lexi Stefanov pre-game.
