ERIE, Pa. - Mercyhurst extended its unbeaten streak to six games thanks to goals from
Molly Blasen and
Megan Whiddon in the Lakers' 2-1 victory over Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers are 5-0-1 in their current stretch, improving to 5-5-2, 5-0-1 in College Hockey America while Lindenwood falls to 3-7-2, 1-3-2 in CHA play.
Both of Mercyhurst's goals were scored in the first period, with Blasen getting the Lakers on the scoreboard quickly to open the game at 1:32.
Megan Whiddon added a power play goal at 14:13 to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead heading into the second stanza. Rachel Smith and
Paige Horton combined for assists on Blasen's goal while Horton and
Jillian Skinner recorded the assist on Whiddon's eventual game-winner.
Lindenwood cut the lead in half thanks to Shara Jasper's shorthanded goal at 2:54 but would not find the back of the net again thanks to a stingy Laker defense anchored by
Sarah McDonnell.
After just one penalty in the first period, both teams escaped a choppy, penalty-filled second period in which Lindenwood was whistled for three penalties and Mercyhurst four. Late in the third, penalties again became a factor as Lindenwood committed four penalties, bringing their game total to eight penalties for 16 minutes.
Mercyhurst returns to action on Nov. 20-21 when the Lakers host Cornell for a two-game series.
