Sarah Wegrzyn, the Mercyhurst University women's volleyball team made short work of Slippery Rock University on Friday night at the Morrow Field House. The Lakers won by the scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-17 to improve to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC Western Division. The Rock dropped to 8-13 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
The Lakers hit .281 on the night as a team, collecting 47 kills while committing only 15 hitting errors. The squad was nearly flawless in the third game, hitting at a .400 clip with 16 kills and two errors in 35 attempts.
Wegrzyn was nearly perfect, posting a dozen kills with just one error in 22 chances (.500 hitting percentage). She led the way with 12 points. Byrnes had 11 kills, four digs, one ace, and one block assist for 11.5 points while Kenny chipped in with eight kills and five block assists for 10.5 points.
Freshman
Shelby Chesko came off the bench to add five kills for the Lakers.
Senior setter
Kelly Vitt had 23 assists and five digs and was replaced by junior
Hannah Tombaugh, who came off the bench to add 13 assists and three digs in the victory.
Mercyhurst will make the short trip to Edinboro University on Saturday to square off against the Fighting Scots. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
