Women's Soccer Posts 4-1 Win Over Lake Erie College In Home Finale

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's soccer team sent the seniors out on a high note on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off visiting Lake Erie College, 4-1, at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field. The Lakers improved to 7-8-2 overall while the Storm dropped to 4-12-2 on the season.

Junior Carly Zimmerman got the hosts on the scoreboard with her third goal of the season in the 24th minute. Junior Fanny Perstrom kept the play alive off of a corner kick with a header to the front of the goal. Zimmerman was able to one-time the pass behind Lake Erie goalkeeper Samantha Ellis for a 1-0 Mercyhurst lead.

The Lakers would score again in the 38th minute when a Lake Erie defender broke up a centering pass from senior Kristina Roberti. However, the ball trickled in behind Ellis for an own goal and a 2-0 Laker lead at halftime.

The visitors cut the Mercyhurst lead in half at 2-1 in the 59th minute after a Mercyhurst foul occurred in the box creating a penalty shot for the Storm. Elizabeth Awuah took the shot and beat senior goalkeeper Ellie McDougall for her fifth goal of the season.

But, Mercyhurst put the contest out of reach with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart. Senior Lauren Testa put the Lakers ahead 3-1 in the 70th minute with her fifth goal of the season, set up by beautiful passing from graduate students Rachel Fulton and Rebekah Reynolds. Senior Allie Cornacchia followed with her second goal of the season in the 73rd minute, blasting a shot from outside the box off of a pass from graduate student Lydia Lopez. It was Lopez' first point of the season.

Mercyhurst dominated the match statistically, outshooting the Storm 32-6, and holding a 14-4 edge in corner kicks. Cornacchia attempted a match-high nine shots with five of those on goal. McDougall, who was credited with two saves, improved to 5-2-0 on the season. Ellis stopped 13 Laker shots in the loss.

The Lakers will conclude the regular season on Saturday, October 31 with a match at Millersville University. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
