ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's volleyball team suffered a three games-to-one loss at the hands of visiting Clarion University on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers dropped to 13-12 overall and fell to 8-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division standings. The Golden Eagles improved to 14-12 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
The teams split the first two games in dominating fashion. Clarion opened the night with a 25-14 victory in game one but the Lakers responded with a 25-13 win in game two. Games three and four were much more competitive but, unfortunately for Mercyhurst, the Golden Eagles won both by the scores of 25-22 and 25-23 to close out the match.
Junior
Sarah Wegrzyn led a balanced Mercyhurst attack with ten kills and a total of ten points. Senior
Lexi Stefanov had seven kills in eleven attempts for a .636 hitting percentage. She added two solo blocks and an assisted block for a total of 9.5 points. Junior
Haley Adams chipped in with nine points after posting six kills, two aces, and a solo block.
Freshman
Shelby Chesko continues to impress off the Mercyhurst bench. She posted eight kills in 14 attempts (one error) for a .500 hitting percentage. She added a block assist for 8.5 points.
Junior
Hannah Tombaugh led the Lakers with 20 assists off the bench while senior
Kelly Vitt had 19. Junior
Samantha Giardina had a match-high 30 digs.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday, October 24, when it hosts the Crimson Hawks of Indiana (PA) at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Start time is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
