Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team dropped two matches Saturday at the Bellarmine Volleyball Classic. The Lakers fell in three games to Bellarmine and Anderson (SC) at the event.
In the match at Bellarmine, Mercyhurst lost by scores of 25-20, 27-25, and 25-14. After dropping the opening game, the Lakers went behind, 20-16, in the second frame. A kill by
Lexi Stefanov and then a pair of
Sarah Wegrzyn points inched the Lakers closer.
Rachel Crittle followed with a kill to make it 22-21. After a Bellarmine point, Wegrzyn scored twice to even the game at 23. Crittle had a kill to push the Knights to the brink, but BU rallied to take the frame, 27-25.
Wegrzyn led with 11.5 points, while
Rachel Crittle recorded 9.5 points.
Kelly Vitt dished out 22 assists and
Samantha Giardina totaled 14 digs.
The Lakers faced Anderson to close out their action for the weekend. AU won by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 26-24 to defeat Mercyhurst. After falling in the first two sets, the Lakers tried to extend the match with a victory in the third game. They trailed 23-21 before
Erin Byrnes recorded a kill. AU answered with a point, but Stefanov scored and then Vitt found Wegrzyn for a kill to tie the game at 24. Anderson then closed the contest with a pair of points to win the match.
Wegrzyn finished with 11 points and Crittle added nine. Vitt compiled 16 assists and 13 digs. Giardina collected 14 digs.
The Lakers (1-2) will host part of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)/Mountain East Conference (MEC) Crossover Challenge next weekend at the MAC. They will play four matches on Friday, September 12, and Saturday, September 13.
