Volleyball Sweeps Pair of PSAC Crossover Matches Friday

CHEYNEY, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team swept a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover matches Friday. The Lakers took down Kutztown and Cheyney in straight games at Cheyney.
 
Against Kutztown, Mercyhurst used a balanced attack to win by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 30-28. The dramatic third set went back and forth, with the Golden Bears eventually going ahead, 20-16. Camille Alvarez scored to cut the deficit and then KU made two attack errors. The teams traded points from there until Erin Byrnes posted a kill to tie the game at 27. A Lauren Kenny point made it 28-27, but Kutztown answered with a kill to even the score again. Kenny then closed the match with two kills, giving the Lakers the win.
 
Alvarez led with 13 points and Kenny recorded 11.5 in the contest. Kelly Vitt compiled 20 assists, while Samantha Giardina registered 15 digs. Vitt and Alvarez added 12 apiece.
 
Mercyhurst closed Friday's action with a 25-9, 25-12, 25-19 sweep of host Cheyney. Byrnes was the Lakers' first server and she quickly got her team out to a 7-0 lead in the opening frame. Rachel Crittle had a kill and then Sarah Wegrzyn scored three points and Kenny added a pair. Crittle ended the game with an ace.
 
In the second set, Mercyhurst hit .353 as Sarah Puckett contributed three late points to push the Lakers to a 2-0 match advantage. The third frame was much closer until Hannah Tombaugh served two aces and then Deanna Coll set up a Kyla Miles kill to give Mercyhurst a 16-11 edge. It maintained its lead and then Abby Rose found Puckett for a point to end the night.
 
Puckett paced the team with 11.5 points, while Byrnes tallied eight. Karly Burns put up  a career-high 18 digs.
 
Mercyhurst improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC with the victories. It plays at West Chester in two more crossover contests tomorrow as the Lakers take on East Stroudsburg and West Chester.
