Box Score INDIANA, Pa.- The #12 Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team won, 15-13, at #7 Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon.
Anna LeGrett and
Taylor Ventre each scored four goals in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown at a cold Miller Stadium.
The game went back and forth throughout, with neither team going ahead by more than three goals at any point. The Lakers took a 7-5 halftime advantage, but IUP quickly erased its deficit with a pair of goals early in the second frame. Ventre converted a free position shot with 22:05 left, putting Mercyhurst back on top. Indiana responded with three straight scores, but Ventre and
Hannah Corton both finished free position chances, making it 10-all with 13:11 to play.
After two Crimson Hawk goals,
Mackenzie Jordan scored on a free position shot and then Ventre did the same, tying the match again with 8:51 remaining. LeGrett then found Ventre for her fourth goal of the game, giving the Lakers a 13-12 edge with just under eight minutes showing on the clock. IUP evened the score at the 5:47 mark.
Just over a minute later, Corton hit Himes for a goal and a 14-13 lead.
Rebecca Muscella made a stop on an IUP shot at the 2:13 mark, giving Mercyhurst possession. The Lakers were able to run the clock until Jordan assisted on a
Jenna Schlagenhauf goal with 29 seconds to go, sealing the outcome.
LeGrett finished with four goals and two assists. Ventre scored a career-high four goals. Himes and Jordan each tallied two goals and a helper, while Schlagenhauf added a pair of goals. Corton chipped in with a goal and an assist. Muscella posted 12 saves in goal.
LeGrett started the scoring, finding the back of the net after just 1:40 of action. IUP answered with three straight goals, but LeGrett cut into the deficit with a goal at the 13:04 mark. After another Crimson Hawk goal, Himes assisted on a Jordan score to trim the margin again. With 9:03 to play in the half, LeGrett converted a free position shot to tie the game at 4.
Schlagenhauf's free position goal gave Mercyhurst a 5-4 edge with 3:31 remaining in the period. LeGrett then found Himes for a goal and then LeGrett scored her fourth goal of the half with 1:09 left, eventually sending the Lakers into halftime with a 7-5 lead.
LeGrett moved into fifth place on the all-time goals list at Mercyhurst. She has scored 108 goals, passing Amy Plumley (106) and Laurie Sienkiewicz (105) on the career list.
Mercyhurst improved to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the PSAC. IUP dropped to 10-3 overall and 8-1 in the league. The Lakers host Kutztown and Bloomsburg at Tullio Field this weekend.
