Lytle's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Men's Hoops Past Edinboro (Video)

EDINBORO, Pa.- Anthony Lytle scored at the buzzer, lifting the Mercyhurst men's basketball team to a 62-60 win at Edinboro Saturday afternoon. Lytle scored 15 points, including a layup at the horn in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest.



Two Jonny Marsh free throws made it 52-39 Edinboro with 8:18 remaining. The Lakers closed the game on a 23-8 run, scoring on 10 straight possessions, to move to 10-3 in the PSAC. Jonathan Ouegnin got things started with a strong drive and finish. He connected on the ensuing foul shot. After a defensive stop, Terrence Ingram sank a long two-pointer. Andy Hoying followed with a baseline jump shot to make it 52-46 at the 6:25 mark. 

Bryan Theriot hit two free throws to give Edinboro some space, but Lytle hit two foul shots of his own. The Fighting Scots scored again, but Lytle came back with a jumper. A Marsh bucket made it 58-50 Scots with 4:23 to play. Lytle responded with another jumper and then Ouegnin made a steal and was fouled. The senior sank both free throws to trim the margin to four points.

Ouegnin came up with another steal on the next Boro possession. He eventually drained a trey from the left wing to pull within 58-57 at the 2:36 mark. Edinboro came up empty on its next trip and Ouegnin was fouled on the other end. He hit the first from the line and then missed the second. Ingram was there to run down the rebound and allow Mercyhurst to call timeout with 1:47 left.

The Lakers drew up a play and Hoying found Dailey for a baseline jumper and a 60-58 edge with 1:31 showing on the clock. Each team missed a shot on its next possession before Theriot was fouled with 27 seconds remaining. The senior sank both foul shots, tying the game at 60. The Lakers called timeout with 12 seconds to go. Ouegnin moved to his right and entered the ball to Lytle on the right block. Lytle turned to the baseline and let go of a contest shot from just outside the paint. The shot banked in as the buzzer sounded, sending the Lakers into pandemonium.

Lytle led with 15 points and nine rebounds. Ouegnin recorded 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Theriot paced Edinboro with 19 points.

In the first half, Lytle hit a jumper and then Paul Bilbo made a jump shot and a layup for a 6-2 lead after 3:19 of action. Edinboro rallied with an 11-0 run to take the lead. Jean Onana sank two straight jumpers to slow the momentum, but Johnathan Logan hit a three-pointer for the Fighting Scots. Buckets by Sein Beins and Andy Hoying kept the visitors close, but Edinboro still led, 21-14, with 8:40 showing on the clock.

Lytle and James Ewing both scored inside to trim the deficit, and then a Ouegnin hoop made it 23-20 at the 6:18 mark. After a Boro foul shot, Ewing made another layup to pull within two. The hosts eventually went ahead, 30-23, but Lytle hit a free throw and then a lay-in. Ingram hit a shot while being fouled and converted on the ensuing free throw to make it 30-29 with 22 seconds left. Two Theriot foul shots made it 32-29 Edinboro at halftime.

On the day, Mercyhurst shot 46.2 percent (24-52) from the floor and held the hosts to 38.3 percent (18-47) shooting. The Lakers outrebounded the Scots, 34-27.

Mercyhurst improved to 14-9 overall and 10-3 in the Western Division. Edinboro is 9-14 overall and 2-11 in the PSAC. The Lakers travel to Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday, February 19, for a game that will have first-place implications. IUP (11-2) hosts Gannon (10-3) later today.

Coach Gary Manchel's squad swept Edinboro for the first time since the 2010-11 season. With the win, the Lakers also secured a winning record for this season.
