Women's Hockey Program Earns 400th Career Victory; Lakers Blank Colgate, 3-0

ERIE, Pa. - Behind a goal and two assists from junior forward Emily Janiga and 15 saves from senior goaltender Amanda Makela, the Mercyhurst University women's hockey team earned the program's 400th career victory on Tuesday night with a 3-0 shutout of Colgate at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers improved to 13-2-1 overall while the Raiders dropped to 3-10-0 on the season.

Head coach Michael Sisti (400-110-35), who has been the only head coach in the history of the program, became just the second coach in the history of Division I women's hockey to earn 400 career victories. Only Harvard's Katey Stone, who has 404 career wins, has more than Sisti at the Division I level.

Meanwhile, the program became the third-fastest school to reach the 400-win plateau at the Division I level - taking just 545 games to hit the milestone. Only Minnesota, which took 502 games, and New Hampshire, which reached 400 wins in 506 games, did it faster.

On the ice Tuesday night, the Lakers scored a goal in each of the three periods and were able to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard, despite the visitors pulling starting goaltender Brittney Brooks for an extra attacker with 4:14 left in regulation.

Freshman Sarah Robello started the scoring at the 2:16 mark of the opening period with her fifth goal of the season. Robello took a deflected puck from Janiga along the left wing boards, skated through traffic to the front of the net, and then beat Brooks with a backhander over the glove hand for, what proved to be, the game-winning tally. Janiga had the only assist on the only goal of the first period.

Of Robello's five goals this season, three have been game-winners.

Shots favored Mercyhurst by a 9-4 margin in the opening twenty minutes.

The Lakers cashed in on the power play in the second period when junior Jenna Dingeldein blasted a shot from the right point, through traffic, and past Brooks for a 2-0 Laker lead at 12:39. It was Dingeldein's seventh goal of the season, second power play goal of the year, and 13th of her career. She added an assist in the third period to move her to within five points of reaching the century mark in career points.

Janiga and junior J'nai Mahadeo had the assists.

Mercyhurst outshot Colgate, 6-5, in the second period.

Janiga finished off the scoring with her team-leading 12th goal of the season at the 7:16 mark of the third, beating Brooks with a forehand shot from the left wing circle. Dingeldein and Robello had the assists.

Makela did the rest, turning aside all 15 shots she faced for her sixth shutout of the season and the 15th of her career. She lowered her goals against average to 0.94 and upped her save percentage to .952 on the year. She ranks second in the country in goals against average and third in save percentage among Division I goaltenders. Her six shutouts also rank second in the nation.

Mercyhurst converted 1-of-4 power play opportunities and killed off all four of Colgate's chances on the night. The Lakers' penalty killing unit has been spectacular through 16 games, allowing just three power play goals on 70 chances (95.7%), second nationally.

With the win, the Lakers improved to 16-2-2 lifetime against Colgate. The same two teams will conclude the mid-week series on Wednesday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Faceoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
