Janiga’s Late Goal Lifts Women’s Hockey To 1-0 Win Over Colgate On Wednesday

ERIE, Pa. – Mercyhurst University women's hockey head coach Michael Sisti got his 400th career win Tuesday night in a 3-0 win against Colgate. On Wednesday afternoon, the Raiders made the Lakers, and him, work much harder in getting win #401.

Mercyhurst junior forward Emily Janiga scored with less than two minutes to play in regulation as the Lakers outlasted the Raiders 1-0 at the Ice Center to sweep the two-game series. Mercyhurst (14-2-1) won for the eleventh time in its last dozen games while Colgate (3-11-0) lost for eighth time in its last nine.

With overtime looming and the Lakers pressing the attack, senior defender Molly Byrne sent a shot toward Colgate junior netminder Ashlynne Rando (2-7-0) that was deflected on goal by junior forward Hannah Bale. Rando made the save, but Janiga was on the doorstep to bang home the rebound. It was Janiga's team-leading 13th goal of the season and 24th point. The East Aurora, N.Y., native factored in all three goals Tuesday (1g, 2a) in the Lakers 3-0 victory over Colgate in the series opener.

The two teams battled on even terms for forty minutes. Both had 17 shots with Colgate holding a 9-4 advantage in the first and Mercyhurst retaliating with a 13-8 margin in the second.

Mercyhurst made things interesting early in the third by taking three successive penalties. The Raiders had a 13-second five-on-three followed by a 90-second two-skater advantage moments later but could not score. Mercyhurst is second nationally in penalty-killing efficiency and thwarted Colgate in all ten power play chances in the two games, including six Wednesday. The Lakers have allowed just three power play goals in 76 opponent chances this season.

Senior goaltender Amanda Makela (14-2-1) registered her seventh shutout of the season and the 16th of her career by stopping 24 shots. Her seven shutouts are the most since Laura Hosier turned the trick in 2006-07 and are one off the career mark of eight set by Mercyhurst Athletic Hall-of-Famer Desi Clark in 2001-02. Makela came into the contest second in the nation in shutouts, third in goals-against-average, and sixth in save percentage.

Mercyhurst has now allowed two goals-or-less in 15 of its 17 contests and is 11-1 on home ice. Mercyhurst has only six home games remaining in the regular season and only four after the New Year.

Mercyhurst improved to 17-2-2 against Colgate in the all-time series.

Mercyhurst will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to play non-conference rival Cornell University in a rare Monday contest. The game will be a rematch of an NCAA Quarterfinal game last March, won by the Lakers 3-2. Faceoff from Lynah Rink is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the first of December.
