Men’s Basketball Prevails Over Daemen in Overtime, 90-84

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's basketball team prevailed over Daemen, 90-84, in overtime Tuesday night at the Athletic Center. James Ewing recorded a double-double, as he posted 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Jean Onana led the Lakers in scoring with 17 points.

The Lakers came out firing on all cylinders in the first half, shooting 55.2 percent (16-29) from the field and 62.5 percent (5-8) from three-point range. Andy Hoying was 4-4 from the field and scored all nine of his points in the first frame. Mercyhurst finished the half on a made three point basket from Onana with three seconds remaining to give the Lakers their largest lead of the game, 40-22.

The Wildcats wouldn't quit, as they rallied from their 18 point deficit to tie the game at 61 with 4:47 to play. Mercyhurst would take a late two point lead, 70-68, with 37 seconds to go, but a late foul call gave Daemen the opportunity to tie the game at the line. Supreme Hannah knocked down both Wildcat free throws that set up an Onana game winning shot that wouldn't fall.

Mercyhurst started the overtime period on a 10-0 run. The Lakers went on to shoot 4-4 in the overtime period, knocking down two three-pointers, to take control with 2:32 remaining. The deficit was too much for the Wildcats, as they would cut the lead to five with 1:13 to play, but the Lakers executed from the charity stripe to put the game away.

The Lakers shot 45.5 percent from the field and converted on 82.6 percent (19-23) of their free-throw attempts.

With the win, Mercyhurst improved its record to 2-3 overall, as Daemen fell to 2-2.

The Lakers will be back in action Saturday, November 29, when they travel to Urbana University in non-conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
