URBANA, OH – Sean Beins career-high 19 points led the Lakers past Urbana on the road, 80-72, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Lakers trailed, 7-0, early in the half at the 17:13, as Urbana started off 3-4 from the field. Mercyhurst would go on a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game, as Terrence Ingram finished a fast-break layup and was fouled on the play. After sinking the free-throw, Beins converted on two quick layups to tie the game at the 14:04 mark.
The Blue Knights and Lakers would continue to exchange buckets with Mercyhurst not able to take the lead until the 4:25 mark when Andy Hoying hit three-pointer to go up two, 22-20.
Mercyhurst would extend their lead the rest of way, as the Lakers outscored the Blue Knights 12-6 to end the half, taking an eight point lead into halftime, 34-26.
The Lakers would extend their lead to double digits in the second when Callon Dailey nailed a jumper at the 12:52 mark to go up 11, 49-38.
Mercyhurst's largest lead would come at the 6:13 mark after a Jean Onana steal led to a Beins three ball to put the Lakers up 15, 64-49.
The Blue Knights cut the lead back to single digits with a minute and a half left to play, but that wouldn't be enough, as the Lakers held on for the victory.
Three Lakers scored in double figures to lead Mercyhurst to their second consecutive victory. Beins finished 7-9 from the field for 19 points, while Dailey added 14 and Onana 12. Mercyhurst shot 27-50 (54%) from the field and out rebounded Urbana 35-30.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 3-3 overall, while the Blue Knights fall to 2-4.
Mercyhurst will be back in action Wednesday, December 3, at Indiana (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division play. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
