ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's basketball team will host cross town rival Gannon for the home opener Saturday, November 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
The Lakers come into Saturday afternoon's contest after winning their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener at California (Pa.), marking the fourth straight victory over the Vulcans. Mercyhurst won all three meetings last season, including a 54-50 win in the PSAC Tournament.
Damon Jones and
Gerrae Williams each scored 18 points to lead the Lakers to their first victory of the season (1-2, 1-0 PSAC). Williams and Jones lead the Lakers in scoring thus far, averaging 10.8 and 8.9 points, respectively.
The Golden Knights are also 1-2 on the season, losing two non-conference games to Glenville Sate and the University of Charleston (WV). Like the Lakers, Gannon rebounded and won their PSAC Western Division opener Wednesday night at home over Slippery Rock, 64-51. Gannon shot 54.5 percent from behind the arc and 49 percent from the field. Senior Adam Blazek led the way for the Golden Knights, scoring 20 points, as he played all 40 minutes.
While Gannon holds the all-time series lead, the Lakers have won four of the last six meetings, including a win at Gannon last season. Mercyhurst has earned at least a split in each of the last four seasons. Gannon edged Mercyhurst last season at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, 56-54.
