ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University men's hockey team scored five unanswered goals, including three in a 1:15 span in the second period, to open up the 2014-15 season with a 6-1 exhibition victory over Ryerson University on Sunday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
After the Rams tied the game at 1-1 at the 8:55 mark of the second period, Mercyhurst blew the game open when seniors
Ryan Misiak,
Zac Frischmon, and
Edward DeWald all scored 75 seconds apart the give the Lakers a 4-1 advantage after two periods. Sophomores
Philippe Drouin and
Stephen Hrehoriak added goals in the third period for the final scoring of the day.
The teams played to a scoreless tie after the opening twenty minutes with the Lakers holding a 12-8 edge in shots on goal after the first period.
Freshman
Jonathan Charbonneau got Mercyhurst on the scoreboard at the 5:25 mark of the second period when he beat Ryerson goaltender Knick Dawe on the short side during a Laker power play. Misiak and sophomore
Kyle Dutra had the assists.
The Rams answered when Kyle Blaney rifled a one-timer past sophomore goaltender
Spencer Bacon, who got the start in goal for Mercyhurst. Daniel Clairmont fed Blaney the pass after the Lakers turned the puck over inside their own zone.
That, however, would prove to be the only mishap of the day for Mercyhurst. Misiak gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead at the 10:55 mark when he knocked home a rebound past Dawe. Dutra took the initial shot that was stopped by the Ram netminder, but Misiak was in the right place at the right time to bury the rebound. Charbonneau had the other assist.
Just 43 seconds later, Frischmon redirected a shot from the left point by Drouin that beat Dawe over the left shoulder to give the Lakers a 3-1 advantage. DeWald, who added the second assist on Frischmon's goal, gave the Lakers a 4-1 lead 32 seconds later when he buried a centering feed from junior
Kyle Cook with the Lakers on a 2-on-1 break. Senior defenseman
Tyler Shiplo sprung Cook with an outlet pass that set up the odd-man rush for the Lakers.
Mercyhurst scored four times on just seven shots in the second period as the visitors outshot the Lakers 13-7 in the middle stanza.
The score ballooned to 5-1 just 1:27 into the third period when Drouin pinched in from the right point and blasted a one-timer past Ryerson's third goaltender of the day, Jake Danson. Senior
Chris Bodo picked up the primary assist when he found Drouin from the right-wing corner. Misiak had the other assist.
Hrehoriak finished off the Rams, and the scoring, flipping a backhander over Danson after a brilliant pass from Misiak found his tape right in front of the Ryerson goal. Freshman
Kane Elliot had the other assist.
Shots were even in the third period, 11-11.
Bacon got the start in goal for Mercyhurst but did not factor in the decision after he left, on a planned goaltending change, with the teams tied at 1-1. In 29:54 of action, the sophomore turned aside 14-of-15 Ryerson shots. Freshman
Brandon Wildung finished out the contest and was sharp in goal, stopping all 17 shots he faced to pick up the victory.
Dawe took the loss for Ryerson, stopping just 3-of-7 shots in the second period. Danson and starter Troy Passingham combined to stop 21-of-23 Mercyhurst shots during the other forty minutes of action.
Misiak finished with a goal and three assists to lead the Lakers offensively. DeWald (one goal, one assist), Charbonneau (one goal, one assist), Drouin (one goal, one assist), and Dutra (two assists) also had multiple-point efforts in the victory.
Mercyhurst will open the regular season on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11 when the Lakers travel to Colorado Springs to square off against the Falcons of Air Force, jumping right into conference play. Faceoffs both nights are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. locally, 9:05 p.m. in the eastern time zone. Â
