ERIE, Pa.- The #9/9 Mercyhurst women's hockey team shut out Providence for the second time in two days, beating the Friars, 2-0, on Homecoming at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Amanda Makela recorded 22 saves to post her second shutout of the young season.
After a scoreless first period, the Lakers got on the board early in the second frame. A Providence penalty late in the first carried over into the next period and Mercyhurst took advantage.
Emily Janiga found
Paige Horton at the point, where she fired, with the puck deflecting off the Friar goaltender and into the net. The power play goal came just 29 seconds in, putting the home team ahead, 1-0.
The teams traded special teams chances throughout the period and the Lakers eventually cashed in. As time ran down,
Jenna Dingeldein passed to
Hannah Bale, who shot from the left side.
J'nai Mahadeo was there to tip her shot down and across the goal line with 0.6 seconds showing on the clock.
Makela made sure Mercyhurst would come away victorious with a strong third period, making 10 stops. She denied several stellar Friar chances, maintaining the shutout.
Horton's goal was the third of her career, while Mahadeo recorded her fourth career goal. Makela tallied 22 stops for her second straight blanking of PC. It marks the first time the Lakers have registered consecutive shutouts since December 6-7, 2013, against Penn State.
Saturday's contest was filled with penalties, as the teams combined for 11 fouls on the day. Mercyhurst's penalty kill held Providence scoreless on six power play tries. The Lakers won 36 of 53 faceoffs, with
Shelby Bram and Janiga each winning 14 draws.Â
