ORONO, Maine- The #7/7 Mercyhurst women's hockey team won, 1-0, at the University of Maine Friday night.
Amanda Makela recorded her third consecutive shutout to open the 2014-15 season.
The Lakers came out on fire, winning 15-19 faceoffs in the first period and outshooting the Black Bears, 20-7. The pressure eventually resulted in a Laker goal. At the 8:22 mark,

Hanging onto the 1-0 lead through two frames, Makela slammed the door on Maine, stopping eight shots in the final twenty minutes. The Mercyhurst defense killed off a pair of penalties in the period as well.
Makela tallied a season-high 25 saves in the blanking. The senior has now faced 62 shots in three matches, turning away each attempt. She has not allowed a goal in 193:19 of play, dating back to last season.
Mercyhurst had a streak of four consecutive shutouts in November 2012, as Makela and Stephanie Ciampa each registered two shutouts in a four-game span.
Mercyhurst held a 42-25 advantage in shots and a 38-27 lead in faceoffs. Each team went 0-4 on the power play.
The win marks the Lakers' first 3-0-0 start since the 2009-10 season. They will go for a weekend sweep of the Bears (2-2-0) tomorrow, as the teams meet again at 1 p.m.
