Shippensburg, Pa. – After dominating the first half of play, Shippensburg's late surge put a scare into the Lakers but were able to hold on to win, 3-2.
Sten Marcson got the rally started in the first half when he recorded his first goal of the season at the 4:59 mark off a free kick for an early Laker lead, 1-0.
Then, in the 11
th minute, senior
Fernando Martinez maneuvered through the Raider defense showing off his nifty moves to create an easy shot for 2-0 advantage. It was Martinez's fourth goal of the season.
Defensemen
Ryan Lund, the South Euclid, Ohio native, would score his first goal of the season in the 32
nd minute off a
Jack Watson touch pass in the box to set up a shot on net that Lund was able to bury in the back of the net.
At the end of the first half, the Lakers sent seven of their 16 shots on net and held Shippensburg without a shot. Mercyhurst would go into halftime up 3-0.
The Raiders would make it interesting late in the second, however.
David Katz would get Shippensburg on the board in the 74
th minute of the second half off a Fred Lucas free kick entry. Katz was able to deflect the ball enabling goal Keeper
Ryan Arvin to make the save.
With a 1:07 remaining in the contest, Katz would tap another ball into the net, this time coming off a Robert Furfaro cross pass to make the score 3-2.
Mercyhurst was able to hold on to the one goal advantage and receive their eighth win of the season.
The Lakers out-shot the Shippensburg 27-3 overall and 11-3 with shots on goal.
Arvin had one save and recorded his third straight win as he improves his record to 4-0-0.
With the win, the Lakers improve their overall record to 8-2-0 and are now 2-1-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Shippensburg falls to 3-4-1 (1-2-0 PSAC).
The men will have a quick turnaround as they look to pick up another conference road win tomorrow at Milllersville. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
