Volleyball Heads to IUP, Clarion for Pair of Western Division Contests This Weekend

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team travels to Indiana (Pa.) and Clarion for a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division matches this weekend. The Lakers play at IUP on Friday, October 3, at 7 p.m. and then take on Clarion the next day at 1 p.m.

Mercyhurst is 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the PSAC. It is coming off one of the most exciting victories in the Coach Ryan Patton era, a 3-2 win over rival Gannon on September 30. The Lakers trailed the match, 2-0, before rallying to knock off the previously undefeated Lady Knights. It marked Mercyhurst's first comeback from a 2-0 deficit since October 7, 2008, against Slippery Rock.
 
Junior Kelly Vitt recorded a career-high 65 assists in the contest, the most by a Laker since Julia Butler's 66 helpers on October 13, 2006, against GU. Lexi Stefanov matched a career high with 19 kills and Camille Alvarez totaled 15 points and 20 digs.
 
Indiana is 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC. It has dropped three straight, including a 3-0 loss at Clarion on September 30. Elizabeth Sova put up 10.5 points on nine kills and a 1.5 blocks, while Lauren Hester added 10 points on nine kills and an ace.
 
Clarion has a 14-1 record, including a 6-1 league mark. The Eagles swept IUP on September 30, bouncing back from a five-game defeat against California (Pa.) last weekend. In the win over the Hawks, Carlie Bieranowski led Clarion with 14.5 points and Laura Subject dished out 37 assists.
 
Sarah Wegrzyn leads a balanced Laker attack this year. The sophomore has 134.5 points, including a team-high 119 kills. Stefanov is next with 130 points, while Lauren Kenny has 118 points, Alvarez has 112.5 and Rachel Crittle has added 101 in 14 outings. Vitt has tallied 430 assists and Samantha Giardina has compiled 220 digs.
 
Hester paces the Indiana offense with 173.5 points. Sova is next with 168 points, including 136 kills on a .246 attack percentage. Katie Miller and Lindsay Moeller have combined for 478 assists and Joie Hrapla has registered 254 digs.
 
Bieranowski has 156 points to lead Clarion. Taylor Braunagel has 154 points on 146 kills. Subject has totaled 547 assists and Morgan Seybold has 298 digs this season.
