Women's Soccer Shuts Out UPJ, 4-0

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team picked up their third Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win over the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, 4-0.

The Lakers got off to a quick 1-0 lead when Junior Fawn Mulholland received a pass off a corner kick from teammate Kristina Roberti at the 3:51 mark. Mulholland was able to coral the pass and put a solid shot in net to beat the keeper right side for her first goal of the season. It was Roberti's second recorded assist.

Mercyhurst would tack on another goal in the 20th minute off a Janine Wong pass to the middle of the box that set up Senior Emily Leiby's shot that beat the keeper left side for a 2-0 advantage. It was Leiby's first goal of the season and Wong's second assist.

Two minutes into the second half, Junior Lauren Testa was able to record her team leading eighth goal of the season for a 3-0 Laker lead. Testa received a pass from Linnea Laitinen in the middle of the box setting up her shot to the left side. The assist was Laitinen's third.

Laitinen would, then, record her first goal of the season off a pass from Rachel Fulton. Laitinen's shot from the left side of the box beat the keeper to the upper right corner for a 4-0 lead at the 53:49 mark.

The Lakers outshot the Mountain Cats 27-2 overall in the contest and withheld UPJ from a first half shot. Mercyhurst also held the corner kick advantage, 7-0.

Goal keeper Ellie McDougall received the win improving her record to 4-6-1.

With the victory, the Lakers record improves to 4-8-1 (3-8-1 PSAC).

The women's soccer team will be on the road for another PSAC match this Saturday, October 18, against Seton Hill. The game is set to begin at noon.
