ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team won their seventh straight game Tuesday afternoon against the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown (UPJ), 8-2.
This marked the first time Mercyhurst has scored eight goals in a game since the 2012 season against Seton Hill in an 8-1 victory.
The Lakers picked up their fifth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win of the season improving their overall record to 11-2-0 (5-1-0 PSAC).
In the first half, midfielder
Danny Deakin placed a cross pass to the middle of the box that set up senior
Ryan Lund's second goal of the year. Lund volleyed the ball to beat UPJ goalkeeper Tim Ofman left side for the early 1-0 lead.
Deakin would assist Sophomore
Jack Watson in the 23
rd minute when he lobbed a pass just outside the box that found the foot of Watson for the 2-0 advantage.
Senior
Fernando Martinez scored 59 seconds later off a Watson pass that set up an open shot from the left side. Martinez was able to bury to go up 3-0.
Deakin would be able to get record his seventh goal of the season at the 25:42 mark from a Watson pass inside the box. Deakin was able to get enough leg on the ball to get it past the keeper for a 4-0 first half lead.
The Lakers didn't waste any time in the second half, as Watson picked up his 14
th goal of the season 36 seconds into the half. He was assisted by
Amar Mann for his first of the season.
Francis Commisso would set up Deakin for his eighth goal of the season in the 50
th minute. Commisso's pass from the left side found Deakin in the middle of the box where he was able to finish right side to go up 6-0.
Erie, Pa. native,
Luke Troncone recorded his first goal of the season off a Deakin cross pass from the left side. Deakin exited the game with two goals and three assists.
UPJ would get on the board in the 72
nd minute when Mike Mercea headed a Colm Spillane cross pass into the net to make the score 7-1.
Mercyhurst's eighth goal of the game came off an own goal that a UPJ player deflected into the back of the net for an 8-1 advantage.
Mercea would record his second goal of the afternoon off a free kick that beat Laker goalie
Daniel Lowton upper left.
It was Lowton's second start in goal this season as his record improves to 1-1-0.
The Lakers will be back in action Saturday, October 18, at Seton Hill. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
