#14 Men's Soccer Defeats Bloomsburg 2-1 to Take Over First Place in PSAC

ERIE, Pa. – The #14 Mercyhurst men's soccer team beat Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leader Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon, 2-1. The Lakers improve their streak to 14-0-0 all-time against the Huskies.

The game did not start off the way Lakers had planned. Bloomsburg would take the early 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game. Off a throw in, Huskies' Mike Bamford connected with Austin Transue who, then, tapped a pass over to Nick Izzo setting up a shot on net that beat goalkeeper Ryan Arvin to the right side.

The Bloomsburg lead would not last for long, as Sophomore Danny Deakin would strike a shot from 20 yards out, at the 6:58 mark, to beat Huskies' goalkeeper Jared Ott to his right side to tie the game 1-1. The goal was Deakin's sixth of the year.

Mercyhurst was able to generate another goal before the end of the half off a Sten Marcson cross pass that found Jack Watson in front of the right post. Watson was able to knock it in for a 2-1 halftime advantage. It was Marcson's fifth assist of the season and Watson's conference leading 12th goal.

The Lakers outshot the Huskies 8-4 in the first half and held the corner kick advantage, 7-2.

Mercyhurst would control the possession most of the second half, as Bloomsburg was held to only three shots.

The Laker offense was able to get off 11 shots, during the second half, as they went on to outshoot Bloomsburg 19-7 overall.

Arvin recorded two saves, as he remains undefeated in net with a 6-0-0 record.

With the win, Mercyhurst takes the number one spot in the PSAC, as they improve to 10-2-0 (4-1-0 PSAC). Bloomsburg falls to 6-3-2 (4-2-0 PSAC).

Mercyhurst looks to get another PSAC win Tuesday, October 14, at home against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
