Volleyball Sweeps East Stroudsburg in PSAC Opener Friday

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team split two matches Friday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers beat East Stroudsburg before falling to Kutztown as part of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover this weekend.
 
In a sweep of East Stroudsburg, the Lakers won, 25-19, 25-22, and 25-20. In the first game, the teams went back and forth until Kelly Vitt led a Laker rally. She dished out a pair of assists and had an ace as Mercyhurst took a 16-8 advantage. Three Sarah Vick kills kept the hosts in control. A Warrior error allowed the Lakers to win the first set by six points.
 
ESU led in the second frame, going ahead, 15-9. Points by Stefanov and Vick got the Lakers back in the game, and then Nicole Texido guided a run. The senior's ace made it 17-16 in favor of the home team. Camille Alvarez had two kills late in the set to give Mercyhurst a 2-0 match advantage.
 
Vick led with 12 points (12 kills). Alvarez and Rachel Crittle combined for 16.5 points. Kelly Vitt recorded 21 assists, while Texido had 18 digs. The Lakers held ESU to .077 hitting in the contest.
 
In Friday's final math, Kutztown defeated Mercyhurst in four games by scores of 27-25, 18-25, 25-19, and 25-21. Lexi Stefanov paced the Lakers with 17.5 points (14 kills, six total blocks). Crittle added 13.5 points (12 kills, three total blocks), while Vick and Sarah Wegrzyn each posted 10 points. Tai Lattimore and Vitt combined for 53 assists.
 
Coach Ryan Patton's squad is now 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC. It will host Cheyney and West Chester in more crossover action tomorrow at the MAC.
