Field Hockey Handles Limestone College, 3-1, Friday (Video)

Blair Pembleton scored twice to lead the Lakers to a 3-1 win Friday.

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team beat Limestone, 3-1, Friday afternoon at Tullio Field. Blair Pembleton scored two goals and Kelsey Lovelace had a goal and an assist to lead the Lakers to their first win of the season.


 
Mercyhurst opened scoring as it earned two penalty corners in the eighth minute. Tracey Mason inserted to Meghan Smith, who shot in traffic. The Saints stopped the initial try, but Pembleton was there to jam in the game's first goal at the 8:55 mark.
 
Rachel Goromonzi quickly answered, tying the contest in the 12th minute. Mercyhurst established possession on the other end and secured another penalty corner. Limestone goalkeeper Lindsay Hinton stopped two shots, but Lovelace found an opening and put the hosts back in the lead at the 21:01 mark. Jess Wess made a stop on a Goromonzi shot late in the first half, allowing the Lakers to keep a 2-1 edge at halftime.
 
In the second half, Mercyhurst totaled five penalty corners and maintained possession for much of the frame. Wess made a stop in the 48th minute to hold off the Saints. In the 61st minute, Emily Koestler made a steal and passed ahead to Lovelace. The junior, appearing in her first game of the season, drove down the right side and passed to the front of the cage, where Pembleton finished to seal the Laker victory.
 
Pembleton scored twice and has three goals on the year. Lovelace had a goal and a helper. Wess recorded four saves in goal. Limestone had 10 penalty corners to nine for the home team.
 
Mercyhurst improved to 1-1 in 2013, while the Saints dropped to 2-1. The Lakers host #9 East Stroudsburg on Sunday, September 15, at Tullio Field. The non-conference match is slated for a noon start.
