ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team rallied to win, 58-54, at Gannon Saturday night. A 13-0 run midway through the second half propelled the Lakers to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division victory at the Hammermill Center.
After a Gannon three-pointer made it 43-32 with 12:50 left in the second half, things looked bleak for the Lakers. However, Mercyhurst was just about to embark on a game-changing rally to take the lead and beat Gannon for a fifth straight season.Â
Anthony Lytle got things started with a layup at the 11:34 mark. After a defensive stop,
Jean Onana drained a trey to make it 43-37.
Jonathan Ouegnin picked up a loose ball and charged in for fast-break hoop. A GU intentional foul sparked Ouegnin and the Lakers. Ouegnin made both foul shots, and a minute later,
Paul Bilbo scored inside to pull within two points with 8:09 to play.
Onana followed with a jumper and then Ouegnin made a steal and sprinted in for a two-handed dunk, putting the Lakers up, 45-43, at the 6:52 mark. The 13-0 run forced a Knight timeout and stunned the Hammermill Center crowd.
After a GU hoop, Lytle scooped up a loose ball and dunked to give the Lakers a two-point edge with 4:28 to go. Mercyhurst followed with a pair of defensive stops and then Onana drained a triple for a 50-45 advantage with 2:23 left. Lytle made a layup 26 seconds later to expand the margin. Gannon trimmed its deficit, but Onana and Ouegnin each converted a pair of free throws to ice the road victory.Â
Callon Dailey hit a three-pointer with 18:10 left in the first half, giving the Lakers an early 4-3 edge. Gannon answered with seven consecutive points, but a
Paul Bilbo layup made it 14:49 remaining. A few minutes later, Onana sank a trey and then
James Ewing made a lay-in. A
Greg Williams free throw at the 9:19 mark made it 12-10 Lakers. After a GU bucket, Lytle scored inside and then drained a baseline jumper for a 16-12 advantage.Â
The hosts rallied with six straight points, but Williams nailed a triple and then Bilbo hit a jump shot for a 21-18 edged with 3:49 showing on the clock. Onana converted two free throws before Gannon scored the final five points of the half for a 28-23 margin.
Onana put up 17 points, including three treys. Lytle added 12 points on 6-7 shooting. Ouegnin recorded seven points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and four steals. A'Darius Porter led GU with 19 points.Â
The Lakers shot 21-47 (44.7 percent) from the field and held the Knights to 21-51 (41.2 percent) accuracy. Mercyhurst posted a 27-0 lead in bench points and a 23-13 advantage in points off turnovers.Â
