Volleyball Falls in Four Games at Indiana (Pa.) Friday

INDIANA, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team lost, 3-1, at Indiana (Pa.) Friday night. The Lakers lost by scores of 29-27, 25-22, 19-25, and 25-14 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division match.
 
IUP took the first two games in close decisions. Mercyhurst tried to stay in the match with a strong third set. Sarah Vick scored on the first rally and then Lexi Stefanov had a block to make it 2-0. Kelly Vitt found Sarah Wegrzyn for a kill and then an IUP error gave the visitors a 4-0 advantage.
 
A little later, Rachel Crittle had a kill and then Nicole Texido posted an ace for a 7-1 lead. Points by Vick and Kelsi Romatowski extended the margin and then Crittle had a pair of kills to give the Lakers a 16-8 lead. The Crimson Hawks rallied, pulling within 18-15 on an Ericka Lentz point. Camille Alvarez answered with a block and then IUP recorded two attack errors to give Mercyhurst a 22-15 advantage. Kills by Wegrzyn and Stefanov closed out the game and kept the Lakers alive in the match. Unfortunately, Indiana won the fourth set and took the contest.
 
Crittle led with 16 points (15 kills, two block assists) and Wegrzyn scored 15 (10 kills, one ace, three block solos, two block assists). Stefanov added 10 points and Vitt dished out 25 assists. Texido totaled 21 digs to pace the Lakers.
 
Mercyhurst dropped to 16-13 overall and 10-9 in the PSAC. Indiana is now 12-19 overall and 8-11 in the league. The Lakers play at Clarion tomorrow in another PSAC Western Division contest.
