ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team won, 77-52, over Urbana Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. A mid-game 32-9 spurt propelled Mercyhurst to its second straight home win this season.
The Laker defense led the way on Saturday, holding Urbana to 18 first-half points and 39.6 percent shooting for the game. Mercyhurst forced the Blue Knights into 4-17 shooting from three-point range.
Beau Samuelson hit a trey at the 17:11 mark to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
Jonathan Ouegnin scored a minute later and then Samuelson sank another triple for a 9-3 advantage after 5:25 of action. Two
Sean Beins scored twice inside and then
Jean Onana hit a three-pointer, giving the Lakers a 16-12 lead with 9:22 remaining.
Layups by
James Ewing and Ouegnin continued the barrage and then
Callon Dailey made a trey. Ouegnin followed with another triple, making it 27-16 with 4:18 to go in the period. Beins capped the scoring with a jumper as Mercyhurst went into the break with a 19-18 lead.
Andy Hoying made a layup early in the second half and then Dailey scored to stretch the margin. Ewing then scored twice and Onana made a lay-in, giving the home team a 41-18 lead after 5:07 of the second half, signaling a runaway for the Lakers.
Dailey led with 15 points and five rebounds. Samuelson added 14 points on 4-5 accuracy from downtown. Ewing tacked on 11 points and nine boards. Ouegnin, Onana, and Beins combined for 25 points.
Mercyhurst improved to 2-3 in 2013-14. It hosts California (Pa.) on Wednesday, December 4, at 7:30 p.m.
